Donald Trump says he has “always been the same person” throughout his campaign and claims the media is trying to change him.
The GOP nominee’s latest criticism of the media was tweeted Sunday night, less than two hours after the Wall Street Journal published an editorial online calling on Trump to shape up – or ship out and hand the nomination to his running mate.
Trump had spent much of Sunday morning ranting against the media in a series of tweets and returned to Twitter at night to continue, adding that he will never change his mannerisms because his supporters like him just the way he is.
“I have always been the same person-remain true to self,” Trump tweeted. “The media wants me to change but it would be very dishonest to supporters to do so!”
The Wall Street Journal editorial noted that Trump’s window for turning around his campaign is closing and called on him to work on repairing his image.
“If they can’t get Mr. Trump to change his act by Labor Day, the GOP will have no choice but to write off the nominee as hopeless and focus on salvaging the Senate and House and other down-ballot races,” the editorial reads. “As for Mr. Trump, he needs to stop blaming everyone else and decide if he wants to behave like someone who wants to be President — or turn the nomination over to Mike Pence.”
Trump tweeted that he has been staying on message but that the media has misrepresented him.
