Zoo that killed 400-pound silverback Harambe to protect boy ‘stands by decision’
The Cincinnati Zoo’s director reports that a special zoo response team has shot and killed a 17-year-old gorilla that grabbed and dragged a four-year-old boy who fell into the gorilla exhibit moat.
The child climbed through a barrier and fell 10ft to 12ft into a moat in the gorilla exhibit where he was grabbed and dragged through the water by the 400 pound mountain gorilla.
After being dragged by the gorilla for about 10 minutes authorities had to take action and shot the gorilla dead. The zoo said it took action to kill the 400lb (180kg) gorilla as the situation was “life-threatening.”
Video shows the boy being dragged through the shallow moat by the enormous animal. The gorilla then stops, with the child below him, looking up at him.
After the gorilla was killed, the child was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Centre with serious injuries. He is expected to recover.
Cincinnati zoo has temporarily shut its gorilla exhibit following the incident.
What do you think? Should Cincinnati zoo officials have shot endangered gorilla to save child’s life?
