Donald Trump loyalist resigns after Republican front runner hires new political director to help win key states in North East and California
Stuart Jolly, the national field director, resigned Monday amid a staff shakeup and reorganization. This followed the hiring of political director Rick Wiley which effectively made him Jolly’s boss.
‘I left. I wasn’t pushed, I wasn’t shoved, I wasn’t asked to leave,’ Jolly told CNN Monday in a phone interview.
Jolly was a close associate of Trump’s campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, and his departure reduces Lewandowski’s loyal circle as Paul Manafort, Trump’s recently hired convention strategist, gains ever more influence in the Trump campaign.
‘I don’t want to hurt Mr. Trump and I certainly don’t want to hurt Corey. You gotta love and respect the people you work for.
‘Things were changing so I’m going to give them an opportunity. I would obviously have less input.’
News site Politico reported that Jolly had refused to work with Wiley, who was hired as political director and comes from having managed Scott Walker’s failed bid for the nomination.
‘Stuart is the only guy who has worked with the field staff, and they are loyal to him. He is the only guy who understands how this works.
‘It is going to be a huge shock when he leaves.
Corey Lewandowski has been making headlines himself recently both for the dismissed ‘Michelle Fields Assault’ charges and for the misquotes in the recent Fox interview. However, Trump has been incredibly loyal to him throughout the difficulties. On Saturday, Trump reassured his senior staffers that none of them would be fired, and that they could stay with the campaign as long as it lasted.
In his resignation letter to Donald Trump, Jolly expressed his “deepest gratitude” to the candidate, declaring “I will never forget your encouragement and loyalty.” But he said he decided “it is time for me to leave the campaign and pursue education reform issues.” He praised Lewandowski, calling him “one of my best friends” and explaining he was “initially the reason I joined this campaign.”
